Michigan State enters this one controlling its own destiny for a trip to the Rose Bowl, and potentially a BCS National Championship Game. As the only undefeated team in this conference, all they’ve got to do is win out, and they’ll be Big Ten champions.
Of course it won’t be that easy as they go to Iowa, where the Hawkeyes are looking to put a brutal loss last week behind them. In that game, Iowa led rival Wisconsin 30-24 late in the fourth quarter, and forced a three and out to get the ball back and take control of that game late. But instead of punting, Wisconsin put on a fake, and picked up an incredible first down. That drive led to a touchdown with just over a minute to go, to seal an upset win on the road.
If Iowa is to rebound this weekend, they’ll need a better effort defensively. On offense, everything is working fine, as the combination of Ricky Stanzi throwing the ball and Adam Robinson running it has allowed the Hawkeyes to score points at will. However, this defense gave up those 31 points last weekend, and were especially bad through the air, where Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien picked them apart for 205 yards, completing 20 of 25 passes.
As for Michigan State, they had a thrilling win of their own, in a come from behind victory at Northwestern. They trailed 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter, before a huge rally kept them undefeated.
Like Iowa, this Michigan State offense is balanced, as they rank in the Top 35 in college football in both passing and rushing yardage. Kirk Cousins leads the Spartans at quarterback, as the veteran signal-caller has thrown for just under 2,000 yards and has completed 14 touchdown passes to just four interceptions. Sophomore Edwin Baker leads this team with 779 yards on the ground.
So with the NCAA Football Odds out, who should your wager be on? We’re saying to take Michigan State.
Clearly with Michigan State playing just their second game outside of their home state’s borders on Saturday, there has to be some concern, especially going into a raucous environment at Kinnick Stadium.
At the same time, there just seems to be something special about this Michigan State team. They beat Notre Dame on that classic fake field goal winner, and needed that incredible comeback last weekend at Northwestern. But unlike in years past, they just keep finding ways to win games, instead of lose them.
The Spartans will find another exciting way to make things interesting Saturday, but in the end, they will get the win. They always do.
Make Michigan State one of your NCAA Football Odds bets this weekend.
